San Juan Hills Transportation Corridor – Toll Road 73

×Details

The San Juan Hills Transportation Corridor is a Toll Road located in Orange County.

David prepared the conceptual engineering designs for this freeway, weaving through existing developments and adjacent to proposed projects, taking into account existing roadways and infrastructures.

This was literally a “thread the needle” project. Research included ownerships, bridge design, and horizontal and vertical alignments of the freeway utilizing Caltrans’ Highway Design Manual. This design was utilized to plan the surrounding communities and is constructed today as a major shortcut through Orange County to Newport Beach as State Route 73 runs approximately parallel to the Pacific Coast Highway and the San Diego Freeway.

  • Design and eventual construction of the highway cost a total of $800 million.
  • 10 interchanges
  • 68 bridges
  • 725 000 square feet (67,000 m²) of retaining walls
  • 32 million cubic yards (24,000,000 m³) of excavation at completion.

There are no HOV lanes currently, but the medians have reserved spots for them if the need arises in the future.
